Then I had a book pop up on my recs on Amazon - Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, Book 1). The cover did nothing for me. Another faceless UF tough chick Sue with leather pants…. Yawn…. Then I read some of the reviews, and I decided to give it a chance.
I’m very glad that I did. I loved this book. Jennifer Estep has given me what I craved. She gave me an anti-hero lead. Gin is an assassin. She doesn’t feel guilty. She isn’t forced. She isn’t doing it to make a better world. She kills people because she’s good at it.
Gin has magic, but she hardly uses it. The impressive body count in the book is taken care of with her skills, not because she’s the most powerful extra-special unicorn. She’s tough. She likes sex. She doesn’t say she’s sorry. I liked her a lot.
Estep’s world isn’t too far from normal either which is something I like. There are vampires, dwarves, giants and elementals mingling with the normal humans. The cast of supporting characters are entertaining and well fleshed out too, and there aren’t too many of them to keep track of. You don’t need to take notes to remember who she’s talking about.
Spider’s Bite was a great read, and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
